Independent portfolio review.

This work was not commissioned or endorsed by the organisation. Identifying details have been generalised.

This preliminary review considers how clearly an organisation’s homepage helps visitors find information about its work, people and specialist technology.

Scope

This was a preliminary review of retrieved homepage content. It did not include automated scanning, visual inspection, keyboard operation or screen-reader testing. No fixes or measured improvements are claimed

What works well

The homepage introduces these three subjects and provides links to explore them. The retrieved content also includes a “Skip to content” link—a useful feature whose operation would need keyboard testing.

Opportunity 1: make links more descriptive

Several homepage links use “Find out more” for different destinations. More specific wording could help visitors understand where each link leads, particularly when scanning the page or navigating a list of links. Whether these links meet WCAG requires checking their programmatic context.

Suggested wording:

  • “Meet our team”

  • “Explore our technology”

  • “Learn about our organisation”

Opportunity 2: simplify the heading structure

The retrieved homepage shows several top-level headings and jumps between heading levels, including small introductory headings marked as level six above level-three section headings. This warrants checking in the live page’s accessibility tree. A consistent hierarchy could make the content easier to navigate by headings.

Suggested improvement: use one clear page heading, level-two headings for the main sections and level-three headings for subsections.

Recommended next step

Test the live homepage and a representative journey using keyboard navigation, a screen reader, zoom and contrast checks. Confirm the barriers before assigning WCAG findings, then retest any changes.
